68.

69.
CodeMirror is a code-editor component that can be embedded in
70. Web pages. The core library provides only the editor
71. component, no accompanying buttons, auto-completion, or other IDE
72. functionality. It does provide a rich API on top of which such
73. functionality can be straightforwardly implemented. See
74. the addons included in the distribution,
75. and the list
76. of externally hosted addons, for reusable
77. implementations of extra features.

78.
CodeMirror works with language-specific modes. Modes are
79. JavaScript programs that help color (and optionally indent) text
80. written in a given language. The distribution comes with a number
81. of modes (see the
mode/

82. directory), and it isn't hard to write new
83. ones for other languages.

84.

85.

86.
Basic Usage

87.
The easiest way to use CodeMirror is to simply load the script
88. and style sheet found under
lib/
in the distribution,
89. plus a mode script from one of the
mode/
directories.
90. For example:

91.
<script src="lib/codemirror.js"></script>
92. <link rel="stylesheet" href="lib/codemirror.css">
93. <script src="mode/javascript/javascript.js"></script>

94.
(Alternatively, use a module loader. More
95. about that later.)

96.
Having done this, an editor instance can be created like
97. this:

98.
var myCodeMirror = CodeMirror(document.body);

99.
The editor will be appended to the document body, will start
100. empty, and will use the mode that we loaded. To have more control
101. over the new editor, a configuration object can be passed
102. to
CodeMirror
as a second
103. argument:

104.
var myCodeMirror = CodeMirror(document.body, {
105. value: "function myScript(){return 100;}\n",
106. mode: "javascript"
107. });

108.
This will initialize the editor with a piece of code already in
109. it, and explicitly tell it to use the JavaScript mode (which is
110. useful when multiple modes are loaded).
111. See below for a full discussion of the
112. configuration options that CodeMirror accepts.

113.
In cases where you don't want to append the editor to an
114. element, and need more control over the way it is inserted, the
115. first argument to the
CodeMirror
function can also
116. be a function that, when given a DOM element, inserts it into the
117. document somewhere. This could be used to, for example, replace a
118. textarea with a real editor:

119.
var myCodeMirror = CodeMirror(function(elt) {
120. myTextArea.parentNode.replaceChild(elt, myTextArea);
121. }, {value: myTextArea.value});

122.
However, for this use case, which is a common way to use
123. CodeMirror, the library provides a much more powerful
124. shortcut:

125.
var myCodeMirror = CodeMirror.fromTextArea(myTextArea);

126.
This will, among other things, ensure that the textarea's value
127. is updated with the editor's contents when the form (if it is part
128. of a form) is submitted. See the API
129. reference for a full description of this method.

130.
Module loaders

131.
The files in the CodeMirror distribution contain shims for
132. loading them (and their dependencies) in AMD or CommonJS
133. environments. If the variables
exports

134. and
module
exist and have type object, CommonJS-style
135. require will be used. If not, but there is a
136. function
define
with an
amd
property
137. present, AMD-style (RequireJS) will be used.

138.
It is possible to
139. use Browserify or similar
140. tools to statically build modules using CodeMirror. Alternatively,
141. use RequireJS to dynamically
142. load dependencies at runtime. Both of these approaches have the
143. advantage that they don't use the global namespace and can, thus,
144. do things like load multiple versions of CodeMirror alongside each
145. other.

146.
Here's a simple example of using RequireJS to load CodeMirror:

147.
require([
148. "cm/lib/codemirror", "cm/mode/htmlmixed/htmlmixed"
149. ], function(CodeMirror) {
150. CodeMirror.fromTextArea(document.getElementById("code"), {
151. lineNumbers: true,
152. mode: "htmlmixed"
153. });
154. });

155.
It will automatically load the modes that the mixed HTML mode
156. depends on (XML, JavaScript, and CSS). Do not use
157. RequireJS'
paths
option to configure the path to
158. CodeMirror, since it will break loading submodules through
159. relative paths. Use
160. the
packages

161. configuration option instead, as in:

162.
require.config({
163. packages: [{
164. name: "codemirror",
165. location: "../path/to/codemirror",
166. main: "lib/codemirror"
167. }]
168. });

169.

170.

171.
Configuration

172.
Both the
CodeMirror

173. function and its
fromTextArea
method take as second
174. (optional) argument an object containing configuration options.
175. Any option not supplied like this will be taken
176. from
CodeMirror.defaults
, an
177. object containing the default options. You can update this object
178. to change the defaults on your page.

179.
Options are not checked in any way, so setting bogus option
180. values is bound to lead to odd errors.

181.
These are the supported options:

182.

183.

value: string|CodeMirror.Doc

189. simply names the mode or is
190. a MIME type
191. associated with the mode. Alternatively, it may be an object
192. containing configuration options for the mode, with
193. a
name
property that names the mode (for
194. example
{name: "javascript", json: true}
). The demo
195. pages for each mode contain information about what configuration
196. parameters the mode supports. You can ask CodeMirror which modes
197. and MIME types have been defined by inspecting
198. the
CodeMirror.modes

199. and
CodeMirror.mimeModes
objects. The first maps
200. mode names to their constructors, and the second maps MIME types
201. to mode specs.

257. sometimes wrong when base direction doesn't match user intent

696.

697.
Key Maps

698.
Key maps are ways to associate keys and mouse buttons with
699. functionality. A key map is an object mapping strings that
700. identify the buttons to functions that implement their
701. functionality.

702.
The CodeMirror distributions comes
703. with Emacs, Vim,
704. and Sublime Text-style keymaps.

705.
Keys are identified either by name or by character.
706. The
CodeMirror.keyNames
object defines names for
707. common keys and associates them with their key codes. Examples of
708. names defined here are
Enter
,
F5
,
709. and
Q
. These can be prefixed
710. with
Shift-
,
Cmd-
,
Ctrl-
,
711. and
Alt-
to specify a modifier. So for
712. example,
Shift-Ctrl-Space
would be a valid key
713. identifier.

714.
Common example: map the Tab key to insert spaces instead of a tab
715. character.

716.

717. editor.setOption("extraKeys", {
718. Tab: function(cm) {
719. var spaces = Array(cm.getOption("indentUnit") + 1).join(" ");
720. cm.replaceSelection(spaces);
721. }
722. });

723.
Alternatively, a character can be specified directly by
724. surrounding it in single quotes, for example
'$'

725. or
'q'
. Due to limitations in the way browsers fire
726. key events, these may not be prefixed with modifiers.

727.
To bind mouse buttons, use the names `LeftClick`,
728. `MiddleClick`, and `RightClick`. These can also be prefixed with
729. modifiers, and in addition, the word `Double` or `Triple` can be
730. put before `Click` (as in `LeftDoubleClick`) to bind a double- or
731. triple-click. The function for such a binding is passed the
732. position that was clicked as second argument.

733.
Multi-stroke key bindings can be specified
734. by separating the key names by spaces in the property name, for
735. example
Ctrl-X Ctrl-V
. When a map contains
736. multi-stoke bindings or keys with modifiers that are not specified
737. in the default order (
Shift-Cmd-Ctrl-Alt
), you must
738. call
CodeMirror.normalizeKeyMap
on it before it can
739. be used. This function takes a keymap and modifies it to normalize
740. modifier order and properly recognize multi-stroke bindings. It
741. will return the keymap itself.

742.
The
CodeMirror.keyMap
object associates key maps
743. with names. User code and key map definitions can assign extra
744. properties to this object. Anywhere where a key map is expected, a
745. string can be given, which will be looked up in this object. It
746. also contains the
"default"
key map holding the
747. default bindings.

748.
The values of properties in key maps can be either functions of
749. a single argument (the CodeMirror instance), strings, or

781.
Commands are parameter-less actions that can be performed on an
782. editor. Their main use is for key bindings. Commands are defined by
783. adding properties to the
CodeMirror.commands
object.
784. A number of common commands are defined by the library itself,
785. most of them used by the default key bindings. The value of a

788.
Some of the commands below are referenced in the default

925.
Customized Styling

926.
Up to a certain extent, CodeMirror's look can be changed by
927. modifying style sheet files. The style sheets supplied by modes
928. simply provide the colors for that mode, and can be adapted in a
929. very straightforward way. To style the editor itself, it is
930. possible to alter or override the styles defined
931. in
codemirror.css
.

932.
Some care must be taken there, since a lot of the rules in this
933. file are necessary to have CodeMirror function properly. Adjusting
934. colors should be safe, of course, and with some care a lot of
935. other things can be changed as well. The CSS classes defined in
936. this file serve the following roles:

943. this class'
height
style to
auto
will
944. make the editor resize to fit its

988.
Programming API

989.
A lot of CodeMirror features are only available through its
990. API. Thus, you need to write code (or
991. use addons) if you want to expose them to
992. your users.

993.
Whenever points in the document are represented, the API uses
994. objects with
line
and
ch
properties.
995. Both are zero-based. CodeMirror makes sure to 'clip' any positions
996. passed by client code so that they fit inside the document, so you
997. shouldn't worry too much about sanitizing your coordinates. If you
998. give
ch
a value of
null
, or don't
999. specify it, it will be replaced with the length of the specified
1000. line. Such positions may also have a
sticky
property
1001. holding
"before"
or
"after"
, whether the
1002. position is associated with the character before or after it. This
1003. influences, for example, where the cursor is drawn on a
1004. line-break or bidi-direction boundary.

1005.
Methods prefixed with
doc.
can, unless otherwise
1006. specified, be called both on
CodeMirror
(editor)
1007. instances and
CodeMirror.Doc
instances. Methods

2808.
Modes typically consist of a single JavaScript file. This file

2812. advanced modes can also handle indentation for the language.

2813.
This section describes the low-level mode interface. Many modes
2814. are written directly against this, since it offers a lot of
2815. control, but for a quick mode definition, you might want to use
2816. the simple mode addon.

2817.
The mode script should
2818. call
CodeMirror.defineMode
to
2819. register itself with CodeMirror. This function takes two
2820. arguments. The first should be the name of the mode, for which you
2821. should use a lowercase string, preferably one that is also the
2822. name of the files that define the mode (i.e.
"xml"
is
2823. defined in
xml.js
). The second argument should be a
2824. function that, given a CodeMirror configuration object (the thing
2825. passed to the
CodeMirror
function) and an optional
2826. mode configuration object (as in
2827. the
mode
option), returns
2828. a mode object.

2829.
Typically, you should use this second argument
2830. to
defineMode
as your module scope function (modes
2831. should not leak anything into the global scope!), i.e. write your
2832. whole mode inside this function.

2833.
The main responsibility of a mode script is parsing
2834. the content of the editor. Depending on the language and the
2835. amount of functionality desired, this can be done in really easy
2836. or extremely complicated ways. Some parsers can be stateless,
2837. meaning that they look at one element (token) of the code
2838. at a time, with no memory of what came before. Most, however, will
2839. need to remember something. This is done by using a state
2840. object, which is an object that is always passed when
2841. reading a token, and which can be mutated by the tokenizer.

2842.
Modes that use a state must define
2843. a
startState
method on their mode
2844. object. This is a function of no arguments that produces a state
2845. object to be used at the start of a document.

2846.
The most important part of a mode object is
2847. its
token(stream, state)
method. All
2848. modes must define this method. It should read one token from the
2849. stream it is given as an argument, optionally update its state,
2850. and return a style string, or
null
for tokens that do
2851. not have to be styled. For your styles, you are encouraged to use
2852. the 'standard' names defined in the themes (without
2853. the
cm-
prefix). If that fails, it is also possible
2854. to come up with your own and write your own CSS theme file.

2855.
A typical token string would
2856. be
"variable"
or
"comment"
. Multiple
2857. styles can be returned (separated by spaces), for
2858. example
"string error"
for a thing that looks like a
2859. string but is invalid somehow (say, missing its closing quote).
2860. When a style is prefixed by
"line-"

2861. or
"line-background-"
, the style will be applied to
2862. the whole line, analogous to what
2863. the
addLineClass
method
2864. does—styling the
"text"
in the simple case, and
2865. the
"background"
element
2866. when
"line-background-"
is prefixed.

2867.
The stream object that's passed
2868. to
token
encapsulates a line of code (tokens may
2869. never span lines) and our current position in that line. It has
2870. the following API:

2871.

2872.

eol() → boolean

2873.
Returns true only if the stream is at the end of the

2940.

2941.
By default, blank lines are simply skipped when
2942. tokenizing a document. For languages that have significant blank
2943. lines, you can define
2944. a
blankLine(state)
method on your
2945. mode that will get called whenever a blank line is passed over, so
2946. that it can update the parser state.

2947.
Because state object are mutated, and CodeMirror
2948. needs to keep valid versions of a state around so that it can
2949. restart a parse at any line, copies must be made of state objects.
2950. The default algorithm used is that a new state object is created,
2951. which gets all the properties of the old object. Any properties
2952. which hold arrays get a copy of these arrays (since arrays tend to
2953. be used as mutable stacks). When this is not correct, for example
2954. because a mode mutates non-array properties of its state object, a
2955. mode object should define
2956. a
copyState
method, which is given a
2957. state and should return a safe copy of that state.

2958.
If you want your mode to provide smart indentation
2959. (through the
indentLine

2960. method and the
indentAuto

2961. and
newlineAndIndent
commands, to which keys can be
2962. bound), you must define
2963. an
indent(state, textAfter)
method
2964. on your mode object.

2965.
The indentation method should inspect the given state object,
2966. and optionally the
textAfter
string, which contains
2967. the text on the line that is being indented, and return an
2968. integer, the amount of spaces to indent. It should usually take
2969. the
indentUnit

2970. option into account. An indentation method may
2971. return
CodeMirror.Pass
to indicate that it
2972. could not come up with a precise indentation.

2973.
To work well with
2974. the commenting addon, a mode may
2975. define
lineComment
(string that
2976. starts a line
2977. comment),
blockCommentStart
,
blockCommentEnd

2978. (strings that start and end block comments),
2979. and
blockCommentLead
(a string to put at the start of
2980. continued lines in a block comment). All of these are
2981. optional.

2982.
Finally, a mode may define either
2983. an
electricChars
or an
electricInput

2984. property, which are used to automatically reindent the line when
2985. certain patterns are typed and
2986. the
electricChars

2987. option is enabled.
electricChars
may be a string, and
2988. will trigger a reindent whenever one of the characters in that
2989. string are typed. Often, it is more appropriate to
2990. use
electricInput
, which should hold a regular
2991. expression, and will trigger indentation when the part of the
2992. line before the cursor matches the expression. It should
2993. usually end with a
$
character, so that it only
2994. matches when the indentation-changing pattern was just typed, not when something was
2995. typed after the pattern.

2996.
So, to summarize, a mode must provide
2997. a
token
method, and it may
2998. provide
startState
,
copyState
,
2999. and
indent
methods. For an example of a trivial mode,
3000. see the diff mode, for a more
3001. involved example, see the C-like
3002. mode.

3003.
Sometimes, it is useful for modes to nest—to have one
3004. mode delegate work to another mode. An example of this kind of
3005. mode is the mixed-mode HTML
3006. mode. To implement such nesting, it is usually necessary to
3007. create mode objects and copy states yourself. To create a mode
3008. object, there are
CodeMirror.getMode(options,
3009. parserConfig)
, where the first argument is a configuration
3010. object as passed to the mode constructor function, and the second
3011. argument is a mode specification as in
3012. the
mode
option. To copy a
3013. state object, call
CodeMirror.copyState(mode, state)
,
3014. where
mode
is the mode that created the given
3015. state.

3016.
In a nested mode, it is recommended to add an
3017. extra method,
innerMode
which, given
3018. a state object, returns a
{state, mode}
object with
3019. the inner mode and its state for the current position. These are
3020. used by utility scripts such as the tag
3021. closer to get context information. Use
3022. the
CodeMirror.innerMode
helper function to, starting
3023. from a mode and a state, recursively walk down to the innermost
3024. mode and state.

3025.
To make indentation work properly in a nested parser, it is
3026. advisable to give the
startState
method of modes that
3027. are intended to be nested an optional argument that provides the
3028. base indentation for the block of code. The JavaScript and CSS
3029. parser do this, for example, to allow JavaScript and CSS code
3030. inside the mixed-mode HTML mode to be properly indented.

3031.
It is possible, and encouraged, to associate
3032. your mode, or a certain configuration of your mode, with
3033. a MIME type. For
3034. example, the JavaScript mode associates itself
3035. with
text/javascript
, and its JSON variant
3036. with
application/json
. To do this,
3037. call
CodeMirror.defineMIME(mime,
3038. modeSpec)
, where
modeSpec
can be a string or
3039. object specifying a mode, as in
3040. the
mode
option.

3041.
If a mode specification wants to add some properties to the
3042. resulting mode object, typically for use
3043. with
getHelpers
, it may
3044. contain a
modeProps
property, which holds an object.
3045. This object's properties will be copied to the actual mode
3046. object.

3047.
Sometimes, it is useful to add or override mode
3048. object properties from external code.
3049. The
CodeMirror.extendMode
function
3050. can be used to add properties to mode objects produced for a
3051. specific mode. Its first argument is the name of the mode, its
3052. second an object that specifies the properties that should be
3053. added. This is mostly useful to add utilities that can later be
3054. looked up through
getMode
.

3121. first argument to the callback is
undefined
, then the
