The ship sailed for Hawaii on 1 October and, en route, participated in Convoy Exercise 3-71. She spent two days at Pearl Harbor before continuing on to Buckner Bay, Okinawa. Leaving Subic Bay on 28 March 1974, she made stops at Guam and Pearl Harbor earlier than arriving again in San Diego on 18 April and coming into a standdown interval which lasted via 29 July. The ship arrived at San Diego on 3 March and began preparations for overhaul. She acquired underway, in tow of Abnaki, for the Long Beach Naval Shipyard on 14 April, and commenced an everyday overhaul there the subsequent day. She returned to San Diego on 1 February and began overhaul there on the 19th. During this yard work, a fire broke out in a upkeep shop and prolonged her keep in overhaul. She returned to San Diego on the 7th and entered a vacation leave and upkeep standing. Following the ship's rescue, Anchorage resumed her authentic schedule which included upkeep in Sasebo, Japan
